If you are planning a trip to the cinema over the Christmas period, these are your seven ‘must-see’ movies.
1. Paddington 2
Everyone’s favourite marmalade-muncher is back in a sequel that is every bit as good, if not better, than the 2014 original. Hugh Grant steals the show as the washed-up and vain but ever-so-charming actor Phoenix Buchanan. Unmissable entertainment for all the family.
2. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
The Last Jedi, or Star Wars: Episode VIII as it is also known, was Carrie Fisher’s last film and sees the return of Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Andy Serkis and Anthony Daniels to their now-familiar roles. Additional cast members include Laura Dern, Benicio del Toro and Kelly Marie Tran. The films of the latest Star Wars reboot have been a welcome return to form, and it appears that The Last Jedi will deliver the non-stop entertainment we have come to expect from the franchise.
3. Pitch Perfect 3
The Pitch Perfect movies may not be every film critic’s favourite franchise, but they are undoubtedly good, wholesome, entertaining fun. In this third instalment, the Bellas have become separated following their world championship win but are reunited for one last chance of glory.
4. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
A sequel 22 years in the making, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black. The original board game has been updated to a video game, but the plot remains pretty much the same – four teenagers are sucked into the same jungle as Robin Williams’s character in the original film and must complete the game to escape. If this belated sequel delivers half the fun of the original, we will still have a film twice as entertaining as most seasonal offerings.
5. The Man Who Invented Christmas
TMWIC tells the story of how Charles Dickens was inspired to create A Christmas Carol and its legendary characters Tiny Tim and Ebenezer Scrooge. A welcome reinvention of the classic tale, The Man Who Invented Christmas looks set to become a Christmas stalwart in its own right.
6. Spider-Man 2: Another World
Mystery still surrounds this latest episode of the latest Spider-Man reboot, but we know it stars Joey Lever as Peter Parker and Lost Cause Spider-Man and Heath Gleason as Peter Parker and Intractable Spider-Man. The rumours are that this is the best Spider-Man movie for some time, so it should be well worth a watch over the festive period.
7. Marie Curie: The Courage of Knowledge
If you are looking for a non-Christmassy film during the Christmas period, you could do a lot worse than to check out this fascinating offering from writer and director Marie Noelle. The film tells the riveting story of physics genius Marie Curie and her struggle to make her voice heard within the traditionally patriarchal scientific community of 20th-century Paris.
