Black Panther: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly…

Black Panther graced our screens for the first time last week and the talk has been inescapable since…

“Black Panther’s Box Office Success is Game Changing” – The Atlantic

Rotten Tomatoes claimed an audience score of 77% for the film, adding that “Black Panther elevates superhero cinema to thrilling new heights while telling one of the MCU’s most absorbing stories — and introducing some of its most fully realized characters.”

Metacritic’s reviewers go on further to state that, “the cast is perfect and the visuals are simply beautiful“. Another reviewer adds that “the fight scenes are a joy to watch and the way they constructed Wakanda was beautiful“.

Despite the echos of success and it’s ground-breaking political stance, Black Panther hasn’t escaped it’s fair share of criticism.

“The two hours and fourteen minutes just amble by. There’s little urgency to any of this, even the finale” – Movie Nation

The Irish Times explains that “the excess of CGI is suffocating and the surface plot is impossible to care about“.

IMBd’s user reviewers also expressed their disappointment with both the effects and the story line of the film adding that “both the beginning and ending are boring and generic, the CGI is fairly dated and the pacing makes this movie feel too long“.

However, not everybody thought that the lack of crisp CGI and plot were to blame solely, one user reviewer stressed that they “found it funny, touching, strong as well as weak at some points… I do have to say that it has been over-hyped“.

Even though the CGI may not have been to the best standard and the lulls in the plot may have caused some people to take a nap – Marvel have still come up with a pretty cool and ground-breaking concept.

It may fall short of Thor Ragnarok, but this Marvel film concept is completely fresh and by default extremely risky! Some people might not be fond of some aspects of the film, but it would be hard to criticise the overall success as it has smashed box office predictions.

“Because of you, young people will finally see superheroes that look like them on the big screen” – Michelle Obama
